Duties / Responsibilities
This position is designed to assist unemployed and at-risk youth to gain insights into occupational choices and explore positive community reinforcements by connecting them with mentors who will provide practical advice, guidance and coaching; leading to improved workplace readiness and community inclusion.
  • Conducts outreach to market Youth Mentoring to unemployed and at-risk youth in various ethnic communities.
  • Recruits mentors; screens and facilitates appropriate matches between mentors and mentees.
  • Provides orientation sessions and training to mentors and mentees.
  • Support and encourage mentors and mentees throughout the mentoring process.
  • Provides information, guidance and resources to ensure sustainability of the matches.
  • Provides counseling based on the needs of the youth (life skills, crisis intervention and telephone support).
  • Liaises with other programs in the community to improve service access for youth.
  • Evaluates the mentoring matches during and upon completion of the process.
  • Participates in the evaluation of program activities, including collection of statistical data and client feedback.

 

Requirements / Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in human services or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years relevant work experience in direct service to newcomer youth or youth  at-risk
  • Demonstrated knowledge of specific issues facing youth.
  • Knowledge of the educational system, recreational programs and youth-related services.
  • Excellent ability for problem solving, assertiveness and ability to engage youth.
  • Well-developed presentation skills and group facilitation techniques.  
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with exceptional multitasking skills.
  • Excellent English communication skills (verbal and written), ability to speak another language is an asset.
  • Proficiency in the use of Internet, E-mail, and MS Office Suite is an asset.
  • Life Skills Coach training is an asset.
  • Required to work flexible evening hours
  • Must have access to a car, as travel within York Region will be a requirement.

Details This is a full-time Union position scheduled to work 35 hours per week. Hours of work shall be scheduled in accordance with Article 12.01 and shall consist of five (5) seven (7) hour days, Monday to Friday.
